The Spearfish Fire Department, founded in 1881, is a volunteer organization located in the northern Black Hills of Western South Dakota.  The department's mission is to preserve life and property in the fire protection district and mutual aid area.  The department also promotes fire safety and knowledge through fire safety education in the local schools and community.  

Department Breakdown

The Spearfish Fire Department protects a community of approximately 13,000 residents and covers an area of 185 square miles from the Wyoming-South Dakota border east to mile marker 17 and from the Redwater River south to the National Forest boundary.

Combination Department

In 2016, the Spearfish Fire Department became a "combination" department with two career chiefs and an administrative assistant. Our volunteer firefighters remain at the heart of what makes us a great fire department.
