Additional designated parking to be marked in downtown Spearfish

SPEARFISH, SD – Downtown Spearfish will soon have six additional parking spaces designated for vehicles bearing disabled parking placards, as well as two spaces for motorcycle only parking near the intersection of Main Street and Jackson Boulevard.

Public Safety Director Pat Rotert explained that several areas of the downtown central core have inadequate designated parking spaces available for vehicles with disabled parking placards, a problem which has presented itself over time via observation, as well as citizen complaints.

“This problem has been present for several years, with the most impact being on the side streets of Illinois and Hudson,” Public Safety Director Rotert said.

Of the approximately 205 parking spaces serving the downtown area, eight are currently designated for vehicles bearing disabled parking placards, and of those, seven are legally compliant and properly marked. The Public Works and Public Safety Departments collaborated and recommended shifting the location of two of the current marked spaces and adding six additional spaces, with all but one of the new spaces located on side streets off of Main Street, improving parking options significantly on the side streets for vehicles with disabled parking placards.

“Effectively, what it does is it addresses each side of the street, with at least one space for each side of the street,” Public Safety Director Rotert said.

In addition, two spaces, one on each side of the northernmost part of the 700 Main Street block, closest to the intersection with Jackson Boulevard, have been identified as too short for many vehicles to fit without extending out into the lane of traffic and will be signed as motorcycle parking only.

“We have a documented history of accidents involving these two spaces, along with complaints from the public regarding vehicles sticking out into traffic from these two spaces,” Public Safety Director Rotert said. “Restricting these spaces to motorcycles only will offer a solution, making that section of roadway safer for those parking, as well as those traveling through the area.”

Locations for the spaces are marked on pages 117-124 here. The designated parking spaces are expected to be marked in the next few weeks.
