[ARCHIVED] Public Works Project Engineer position created

City of Spearfish

SPEARFISH, SD – The Spearfish City Council Monday approved the position description for a project engineer, a new position within the Public Works Department, and authorized staff to begin recruiting candidates for the position.

The purpose of this position is to assist in directing and participating in the provision of engineering support for City operations, and the primary duties would be contract administration of capital improvement projects. The job summary describes: “The project engineer provides project management on City projects, including construction inspection, quality control, and survey/staking (as necessary), performing plan reviews, project coordination, and various aspects of capital planning and asset management.

The project engineer will be supervised by the Assistant Public Works Director and is a new position within the Public Works Department. The workload in the City’s Engineering Department has increased considerably over the last few years, and the Public Works Project Engineer will reduce the need for assistance from the Engineering Department in managing City construction projects, allowing Engineering Department staff to focus on overseeing the design and construction of private development.

The position was graded by Condry & Associates as a grade 22 with a professional engineer license and a grade 21 with a successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam. The position was not budgeted in 2022 and will be funded from cash on hand.
