SPEARFISH, SD (September 28, 2022) - Traffic restrictions will continue to take place along Windmill Drive and at the Sandstone Hills Drive intersection until late in the evening Friday, September 30th.
The water main break near the intersection of Windmill and Sandstone Hills has been repaired and the area has been mostly backfilled.
Concrete work at the intersection of Sandstone Hills and paving on Windmill will continue until Friday, September 30th.
Windmill Drive will continue to be closed to through traffic, but access to residents who live on Windmill Drive will be allowed. The detour route utilizing Woodlands Drive will remain in place for residents that do not live on Windmill Drive. The intersection of Windmill Drive and Sandstone Hills Drive will be opened to traffic Friday, September 30th, late in the evening.

Water main break at Sandstone Hills Drive/Windmill Drive intersection
SPEARFISH, SD (September 26, 2022) - Early Saturday, September 24, the water main broke in two locations, both near the intersection of Sandstone Hills Drive and Windmill Drive. The section of water main with the breaks has been isolated and shut down. Those affected by this shutoff have been notified and alternative accommodations made. The area has been fenced off while it dries out.
Please stay out of the area as it is unsafe. Repairs will begin on Monday, September 26, after the area dries out some and the trench has stabilized some. Additional water shutoffs will be required during the repairs, and those affected will be notified directly. The repair work may extend the closure of the intersection until the repairs and temporary surfacing are complete.
The contractor plans to continue paving operations on Windmill Drive this week. The City and the contractor will work together to expedite the repairs, opening of the intersection, and completion of the project as much as we can. More information will be sent out once a more accurate timeline can be established after the full extent of the damages are assessed.

Intersection of Windmill Drive and Sandstone Hills to be closed, with detour in place
SPEARFISH, SD (September 19, 2022) - The following is an announcement for traffic restrictions to take place along Windmill Drive and Sandstone Hills Drive starting Wednesday, September 21st and ending Tuesday, September 27th. The intersection of Windmill Drive & Sandstone Hills Drive will be closed for the finalization of the sanitary sewer work on Sandstone Hills Drive. Asphalt paving will also be taking place during this time on Windmill Drive which will affect traffic and parking along Windmill Drive. Windmill Drive will be closed to through traffic, but access to residents on Windmill Drive will be allowed. A detour route utilizing Woodlands Drive will be established for residents that do not live on Windmill Drive. The sanitary sewer work and paving operations are scheduled to be completed by the end of the day Tuesday, September 27th but might be extended due to inclement weather.

Update - Sandstone Hills Drive sanitary sewer main upsizing project
SPEARFISH, SD (July 29, 2022) - The contractor at Sandstone Hills Drive has experienced numerous delays while working on upsizing the sanitary sewer main.
There is large number of utilities in this location that makes working in this area difficult and tedious. The gas line was directly over portions of the sewer main and will need relocated. The watermain was at an elevation that conflicted with the new upsized sewer main. After re-aligning the watermain we experienced a water main break under Colorado Boulevard. The soil conditions in combination with the depth of the sewer main has made excavation challenging and hazardous. The contractor will be changing their excavation methods to make the work safer for their employees. This will result in an increased amount of construction traffic as they haul material off and on the project.
A new watermain will need to be bored under Colorado Boulevard. This will result in Sandstone Hills Drive continuing to be closed. Once we have an estimate on when materials will be delivered and schedules for a subcontractor to bore the casing pipe under Colorado Boulevard, we will have a better estimate of when this work will be completed and re-opened to traffic, but this could result in the closure of Sandstone Hills Drive continuing into the fall.
The contractor will work to accelerate the work on Windmill Drive and plan to start the mill and overlay in the next few weeks. Then progress over to Iron Horse Loop to complete the work on that route.
The intent is that the contractor will still complete all of the work this fall, just not in the order originally planned.
We appreciate your patience while the contractor works through these challenges. Additional notifications will be sent out as the work progresses and we have updated timeframes for when traffic configurations will be changing.

Detour for Sandstone Hills Drive (from Colorado Blvd. to Windmill Dr.) begins Saturday
SPEARFISH, SD (June 16, 2022) - The Contractor plans to begin work on the sanitary sewer upsize on Sandstone Hills Drive on Saturday June 18, 2022, from Colorado Boulevard to Windmill Drive.
Sandstone Hills Drive will be closed from Colorado Boulevard to Windmill Drive for approximately 4 weeks scheduled until the completion of the sanitary sewer upsize and resurfacing. The Detour route will be on Colorado Boulevard, 27th Street, and Windmill Drive.
During this work, the intersection of Sandstone Hills Drive and Windmill Drive will also need to be closed while the Contractor replaces the manhole in the intersection for about one week. The detour for this work will be on Branding Iron Drive, Saddle Horn Drive, Bluestem Boulevard, and Woodland Drive. Additional notifications will be sent out at that time.
The detour routes will be marked with signs.
The contractor plans to continue work on replacing concrete curb, gutter, sidewalk, and asphalt patching in other areas of the project while limiting impacts to the detour route(s).
