Spearfish kicks off summer safety campaign with theme, 

‘Stay safe off the clock!’

SPEARFISH, SD - The City of Spearfish Safety Committee is kicking off a summer safety campaign with the theme, Stay safe off the clock! In addition to increased safety tips, safety grams, summer safety training, and more reminders of being safe during off-the-clock summer activities for City employees, the Safety Committee will be sharing safety information with the public, to broaden safety culture across the community.

“With summertime, comes increased risk for accidents and injuries. Whether it is increased responsibilities at work or increased risk factors in your personal life, summer brings an increased risk of accident, injury, and death to you and your families,” Parks and Recreation Director/Safety Coordinator Tyler Ehnes said. “We hope this increase in awareness and this safety campaign push will result in safer employees and citizens, reduced accidents, and zero summertime related injuries.”

The Safety Committee will be posting information on the City website and social media related to safety risks related to off-the-clock activities people enjoy in the summertime, such as water safety while at the pool or lake, heat safety as temperatures rise, grilling safety during barbecues, etc.

“We’ve seen incredible benefits since implementing a safety program in 2019, from fewer recordable accidents to an improved workers’ compensation fund modifier, all of which benefit the City financially, and most importantly, increased safety and wellbeing of our people,” Safety Coordinator Ehnes said. “These safety reminders apply to everyone, and we are excited to kick off this summer safety campaign.”

“As you partake in off-the-clock summer activities, please be cognizant of the hazards around you and implement some of these safety tips to keep yourself and your families and friends safe,” he added.
