Practice social distancing everywhere in public – even outside!

Spearfish reminds residents to assist in keeping public open spaces safe

SPEARFISH, SD (March 26, 2020) – During this disruptive time, people need outlets for stress and anxiety, and exercise and fresh air are healthy options! While in the pursuit of exercise and fresh air, residents are reminded to practice social distancing – deliberately increasing physical space between people to avoid spreading illness – to slow the community spread of COVID-19.

When on a walk or utilizing the public open spaces, such as City parks, residents are urged to avoid grouping (outside of their immediate family) and to stay at least 6 feet away from other people/family groups. When utilizing the City rec path, please be respectful of other uses and be patient as everyone accommodates these social distancing measures, especially in the coming weeks as the weather turns to spring.

The City recognizes that now more than ever, with school closures, remote work schedules, canceled events, limited business access, etc., people need ways to be active, and the Mayor and City Council hope to allow the City parks to remain open as long as people can responsibly and safely use the spaces.

To assist in this effort to keep the parks open, the City asks residents to practice all recommended Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines, which currently include:

  • Avoid groups of 10 or more people;
  • Practice social distancing, keeping at least 6 feet away from others;
  • Avoid non-essential travel;
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

“We live in an area with incredible natural scenery and outdoor activity opportunities, and we must continue to be vigilant during this pandemic to protect our neighbors even when enjoying the outdoors,” Mayor Dana Boke said. “Thank you for taking social distancing seriously. This is an enormously stressful time for everyone – please continue to be patient and kind with each other.”
