Assistant Public Works Director (full-time)

Responsibilities:  The Assistant Public Works Director (full-time) will plan, organize, and direct a variety of public works activities including solid waste collection and Restricted Use Site operations; fleet management; street management; snow removal; and government facilities and grounds.  Will also perform construction administration work in support of these functions and oversee city infrastructure projects within area of responsibility.       

Requirements and preferred experience:  Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in engineering, construction management, public administration or directly related field from and accredited college or university preferred along with five years’ progressively responsible experience in private or public engineering, construction management or related field and/or a relevant combination of education/experience as may be deemed acceptable to the hiring authority.  Possession of a valid driver’s license and clean driving history required.  Residency required within a distance from the City of Spearfish adequate to meet a thirty-minute response time.

 Police Officer (full-time) 

Responsibilities:  City of Spearfish Police Officers will enforce local, state, and federal laws, prevent and suppress crime and accidents, and promote public safety through community policing principles.

Requirements:  Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED certificate, possession of a valid SD driver’s license with an insurable driving history, Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission Certificate or ability to obtain within one year from hiring date.  Preference will be given to candidates with certification.   Position will require availability to work all shifts, weekends and holidays.

Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator
 (full-time) 

Responsibilities:  The Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator will monitor and control wastewater sources and flows, operating pumps, motors, valves and adjusting chemical dosages.  Operators will monitor flow meters, lights, and hour meters of assigned control panels, and according to demand adjust pump rates to maintain appropriate levels of plant operations and wastewater treatment.  Prepare water, wastewater and sludge samples for laboratory testing.

Requirements:  Associate’s degree in environmental science, biology, engineering technician, industrial technology or directly related field from an accredited college or university preferred and/or a relevant combination of education/experience as may be deemed acceptable to the hiring authority.  Candidate must have the ability to obtain a South Dakota Class 1A Commercial Driver’s License with a tanker, air brake, and pintle hitch endorsements within 90 days from date of hire.  Candidates must have an insurable driving history.  Candidates must have the ability to obtain Wastewater Treatment Certification within 18 months of hire.  Preference will be given to candidates with Wastewater Treatment certification from the State of South Dakota, experience in activated sludge, solids dewatering and UV disinfection.  Wastewater Treatment Operators are required to be on call and have residency that allows for a response time of 30-minutes.

City of Spearfish 2019 Summer/Seasonal Positions

Recreation and Aquatics Center:

Requirements:  Summer Customer Service Assistants and Lifeguards must be 16 years of age or older.  All other positions must be 18 years of age or older before date of hire.  Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving history.  Starting wage $9.75-$11.25 per hour depending on position.  Hours can be weather dependent. 

Public Works/Parks Department Laborers:
Requirements:  Laborers will work 40 hours per week unless noted otherwise.   Applicants must be 18 years of age or older before date of hire.  Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving history.  Starting wage $11.25 per hour (Campground position wages vary depending on if a campsite is provided).

Street Technician (full-time)

Responsibilities: The Street Technician will work mainly outdoors in all weather conditions to maintain and repair the streets, storm sewer, and right-of-way activities within the jurisdiction of the City of Spearfish.  Day to day tasks include:  street asphalt paving and patching work, concrete flatwork, gravel road maintenance, storm sewer maintenance and repairs, sign inventory and compliance, pothole repairs, alley maintenance, street painting and striping, trash and debris removal, emergency storm work, street sweeping, mowing right-of-way, traffic signal maintenance, street light maintenance, snow removal operations, airport maintenance including facilities, runway and grounds, and on call duties.        

Requirements:  Four (4) years’ experience and training in heavy equipment operation and maintenance. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED certificate.  Possession or ability to obtain a valid South Dakota Class 1A driver’s license with air brakes, combination, and tanker endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire.  Candidates must have an insurable driving history.

Motor Pool Mechanic (full-time)   

Responsibilities: The Motor Pool Mechanic will perform maintenance, repair, overhaul, rebuilding, replacement, or manufacturing jobs as needed on all assigned city-owned vehicles and equipment.    
 
Requirements:  Graduation from two-year college or technical school with an Associate’s degree in operation and repair of vehicles and equipment with three years related experience; or five years of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential functions of this position.  Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED certificate.  Must have and maintain a valid South Dakota Class 1A driver’s license with air brakes, pintle hitch, and tanker endorsement with an insurable driving history.
